Many times in life we hear about the destination. When we get (fill in the blank) then, or if I get (blank), then. Living our lives with an if/then, when/then attitude can steal the joy of living in the gift that God has given us called the present. I didn’t realize that was how I had been living. I was so focused on the goal and the destination that I missed all of the wonderful things that were going on in the present. I had missed little joys with my children and with my husband and with family members no longer alive. I had been so consumed by reaching the destination that I had convinced myself that I couldn’t really be happy until I got there.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” Psalm 32:8
“A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
Then one day, I “got there”. I finally reached one of the destinations that I had always wanted to get to. Guess what? It wasn’t what I thought it would be. Actually, it was SO bad, it made me want to abandon that journey altogether. To make matters worse, when I thought about all that I had sacrificed to reach that destination, I was sick to my stomach. Perhaps I had tried to make my will His will?
“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding;” Proverbs 3:13
I am so thankful that God brought to my attention all of the things I was missing out on. I regret that I missed so much, but now that I am aware, I can be proactive in managing my destination mentality. I can begin to find joy in the journey. God would not have given us so much to admire and enjoy if all He wanted was for us to move to the next level (the destination).
“Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.” Job 5:17
Take time to slow down, spend time with God and family and friends. We can make plans, and should, but in the end, God will decide. Follow Him and enjoy each day for the gift it is. Treasure the relationship you have with God and those you love. Experience the journey.
